We often have an unconscious tendency to make split second judgments about others without knowing the complexity of contexts which influence the reality that lays hidden beneath layers of assumptions. In a time when media portrayals (social and conventional) of “appearance” and “perception” have the ability to dictate reality, our acceptance of these falsified truths denies justice to the struggles each of us faces. We cover up our true stories beneath blankets of stereotypes, public appearance, and community expectations, thereby crafting a superficial narrative that is easyily accepted and perpetuated by others.

“Assumptions” is a series of self-portraits in which the photographer explores superficial narratives relating to their own life. Narratives surrounding regional stereotypes, body image and public perceptions of happiness. The series asks viewers to reflect on the assumptions others make about them and in turn those they make about others without knowing their experiences.
